Femoroacetabular Impingement
Femoroacetabular impingement occurs when the head (or “ball”) of the femur is unable to achieve a full range of motion in the hip socket due to excess bone bumps or growth.
Symptoms
- General or sharp pain or soreness in the hip area
- The pain is most commonly felt in the groin area, especially after either an extended period of non-movement (e.g. sitting) or movement (e.g. walking).
- The pain can be experienced as a dull, throbbing pain or a sharp, popping sensation.
Hip Arthritis
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, which is a general term used to describe the deterioration of a joint. Typically joints are covered with a smooth hyaline cartilage which allows for pain free motion of the joint.
Symptoms
- A general ache or pain around the hip, including the groin, knee, outer thigh, or gluteus.
- Pain or stiffness of the hip that is more pronounced after sitting, resting, or lying down, but improves with activity and movement.
- Pain in the hip joint that leads to a limp or more painful walking.
Hip Fractures
A hip fracture occurs when there is a break in the upper part of the femur bone. There are three primary types of hip fractures: intracapsular fractures, intertrochanteric fractures, and subtrochanteric fractures.
Symptoms
- Significant pain in the upper leg area.
- The pain may be felt on the inside of the leg, outside of the leg, or across the entire leg.
- The pain will likely increase with any attempt to rotate the hip joint.
