Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Sports Medicine
A good friend of mine in medical school was two years older and when he started his orthopedic surgery residency, he sat me down in the library and went through what he called, the ‘spectrum of medicine.’ On one end of the spectrum are fields of medicine where there is a lot of time and resources spent trying to figure out what the patient’s diagnosis is, but then there often aren’t good treatment options. On the other end is orthopedic surgery. We typically know what the problem is and can spend most of our time helping the person with the problem and can really impact his or her quality of life. As my friend stated, ‘We can’t help everyone but we can help most.’ It’s a very special thing to help someone alleviate pain, improve function, and improve overall quality of life
Evan N. Hermanson, MD is a board certified orthopedic surgeon whose practice is founded on the treatment and care of disorders of the musculoskeletal system with subspecialty training in arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction of the shoulder, hip and knee. In addition to his arthroscopic practice, he performs unicompartmental and total knee replacements.
Before joining Orthopedic Institute in 2007, Dr. Hermanson completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and Reconstructive Surgery at Southern California Orthopedic Institute. He attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and his residency was completed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Hermanson is a South Dakota native and graduated from O’Gorman High School. He is married to his high school sweetheart, who also happens to be a world famous OB/GYN. They have three children that occupy most of their time outside of his orthopedic practice. As a lifelong sports fan, Dr. Hermanson continues to be involved by taking care of student athletes as the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon for Southwest Minnesota State University athletics.

I was very nervous before my appointment but Dr. Hermanson took the time to answer my questions and calm my fears! The entire staff was professional and caring. I would highly recommend Dr. Hermanson.
This was my second knee procedure with Dr. Hermanson. As a patient, both procedures have resulted in excellent outcomes. Dr. Hermanson and staff answered any questions I had in a direct manner and I was very satisfied with the whole examination, pre-surgery, and surgery experience. Very thorough process.
I am extremely impressed by Dr. Hermanson and his staff at orthopedic institute. This will be my 3rd hip surgery with him, he is always open to listening to me about my condition and the issues with it. His willingness to get you back to normal is unparalleled. I recommend him to everyone.
From my first consult I liked Dr. Hermanson and felt very confident in his abilities to fix my shoulder. My surgery and hospital stay were so positive! I recommended him to a friend and he did her surgery as well. He and his staff are professional, kind and a pleasure to work with! I highly recommend him! Paula Matson.
I struggled for over a year trying to figure out what was wrong with me. My first visit to Dr. Hermanson’s office he found a tear that no other doctor had found. I’m thankful that Dr. Hermanson found what was wrong. I’m now four days post op, and am satisfied so far with my surgery. Extremely impressed with Dr. Hermanson and his staff! His PA, Chris, and his numerous nurses are outstanding. They’re all compassionate and made my surgery as easy as it could be. I would highly recommend my friends and family to the Orthopedic Institute.
