Shoulder, Elbow, Hip, Knee, and Sports Medicine
Being a physician is not just a job for me, it is a calling. There are two things that I am passionate about: 1. My family and 2. My profession. I am driven to help people overcome pain and disability to reach their goals in life, leisure, and occupation. When deciding both non-operative and operative treatment options for my patients, I place myself in my patient’s situation, and I recommend for them that what I would choose for myself or for my family. In order to provide the best care for my patients, I ensure that I am on the forefront of orthopedic research and medical knowledge. I have authored over 80 scholarly papers, presented research at national meetings, and even written a book on arthroscopic surgery.
I chose a career in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery because I grew up playing sports in both high school and college and the physicians that I saw as a youth were sports medicine specialists. Although I am no longer playing team sports, I still feel like I am part of the team when I help my patient athletes return to play.
Dr. Baumgarten is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He is the first and only physician in South Dakota to be elected to the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. In addition, he was the first fellowship-trained hip arthroscopy specialist to care for patients with hip pain in South Dakota.
Dr. Baumgarten served as an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team while completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. During residency, he trained with the team physicians of the St. Louis Rams, Blues, and Cardinals sports teams and is the current Head Team Physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Dr. Baumgarten is passionate about improving the quality of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care. He feels that by performing both basic science and clinical research, he can potentially help millions of people improve the quality of their lives, in addition to the patients that he sees here at the Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Baumgarten has been presented with the Charles S. Neer Award in 2011 and 2013 for the best shoulder research performed that year, and the O’Donoghue Award in 2014 for his research on ACL injuries. He is quoted in an in-depth article by ESPN on Human Growth Hormone. A very interesting read for anyone, from athletes to farmers, who are trying to recover more quickly.
When Dr. Baumgarten isn’t caring for his patients or on the sideline helping athletes, he can be found participating in sports, playing and listening to music with his children, reading, and spending time with his family

Dr Baumgarten is the best!!! His nurses are awesome and so kind!!
Dr Baumgarten was on time, thorough, and listened to my concerns. He also has great bedside skills. Very good Dr.
Dr. Baumgarten was excellent, answered all of my questions with precision and grace. I felt that the doctor listened to my concerns and addressed them appropriately.
Everyone there was great, helpful and friendly they made me feel safe and comfortable.
Great professional care.
I am so relieved that I finally have an answer to help me rather than getting the answer “I have to deal with it.” Very relieved to know my doctor is going to try his hardest to help me and get me back to almost normal.
It’s an excellent place! The staff is awesome! I am very satisfied with my treatment! I have recommended Orthopedic Institute to a couple of my co-workers.
My visit could not have been any more positive and speedy. That said, if my wait time would have been longer, I would not have been upset. I would think that there are many variables that are encountered every day in your practice. If I would have needed more time with my provider I would hope that he would have spent more time with me. If that is my expectation for my visit, I would extend the same courtesy to any patient that preceded me in my Dr.’s schedule.
The nurses are professional and very helpful.
Dr. Baumgarten is very straight forward yet understanding of my hip issues. My doctor visit led to surgery with excellent results. Not living in the immediate area, I was thankful that they were respectful of my time and made efficient use of every trip I made to their office. The staff is knowledgeable yet personable. I highly recommend them! A fabulous doctor and team!!
Dr. Baumgarten’s kind and pleasant personality set me at ease for the complex shoulder replacement surgery. He’s an outstanding and highly skilled surgeon; I highly recommend him.
Dr. Keith Baumgarten is not only knowledgeable, but has a great bedside manner and sense of humor. I would highly recommend him to anyone with knee problems like mine. The steroid injection has been a great relief over the past 3 years.
Dr. Baumgarten is the ultimate professional, he takes time to explain every part of the procedure and answers all my questions. He has performed 3 different surgeries for me over the last 12 years and the outcomes have been amazing.
I was very impressed with Dr. Baumgarten at my initial appointment. He seemed so knowledgeable about my issue and I felt grateful for his wisdom and experience in this area. I had the utmost confidence in him and now that surgery is over I am even more impressed. So glad I was referred to him and would definitely recommend him.
