About
Dr. Rasmussen is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in total hip and knee replacements. He grew up in Mitchell, South Dakota, and completed medical school at USD Sanford School of Medicine. After residency at the University of Florida Jacksonville and a resident researcher appointment at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, he completed the Hedley Adult Reconstruction fellowship in Phoenix, AZ, at Abrazo Orthopedic Specialists.
Soft tissue preservation is critical in achieving rapid recovery after total joint replacement. For this reason, Dr. Rasmussen employs less invasive techniques during joint replacement, including the SuperPATH® tissue-sparing surgical approach for total hip replacement, the subvastus quadriceps-sparing approach for total knee replacement, and robotic-assisted surgery. These techniques may enable the patient to leave the hospital earlier without requiring the typical post-operative hip restrictions. Additionally, Dr. Rasmussen enjoys complex revision joint replacement, general orthopedics, and orthopedic trauma.
During his free time, Dr. Rasmussen enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors. He enjoys sharing his love of hiking, biking, golfing, and skiing with his wife and two sons. In addition, Dr. Rasmussen and his wife love exploring the local food scene, and he always appreciates a good restaurant recommendation.

I saw Dr. Alvine in Pipestone, MN. This has helped me miss less work. I have benefited from the PT also.
This was my first visit to the institute. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly. Dr Alvine and Mary, who I saw are exceptional.
I have been going to Dr. Alvine since 2009 or so... have always been treated well and have had my questions answered to my understanding! I have severe ankle and feet issues.... and have several surgeries with Dr. Alvine and it has improved my quality of life!! All staff from walking in the door to leaving have been polite and helpful!
Dr. Alvine and Mary have been taking care of me for the last 7 years since having a major back, ankle, and leg injury! I’ve had two additional surgeries in the last 4 years and can’t thank Dr. Alvine, Mary, and their staff enough for everything they have done. I highly recommend them to anyone with an orthopedic injury!
I have been so scared to get the surgery Dr. Alvine recommended and finally got it done Wednesday and I couldn't be happier! The pain I have from the surgery is less than when I was going to work everyday and trying to live a normal life! The staff and Dr. Alvine have been the most pleasant and comforting people I have ever met. Knowing that they care and are there to help has made this process so much smoother for me. And even hearing that I will need yet another surgery I can say I am not worried about it and know that I can trust everyone there. THANK YOU all at Core orthopedic
Dr. Alvine preformed an ankle fusion on my left ankle in 2016. It was a complete success. So glad he did it.

About
Michael J. Adler, MD provides general orthopedics, specializing in hip and knee replacement. He trained in joint replacement at the Mayo Clinic and then furthered his education in joint reconstruction at the Florida Orthopedic Institute with an entire year dedicated to minimally invasive hip and knee reconstruction.
He specializes in anterior hip replacement. The approach to the surgery does not cut muscle and therefore reduces healing time. He also specializes in minimally invasive knee replacement. New advances in technology have improved knee replacement to feel more natural with better biomechanics. Hip and knee replacements can wear out over time and need to be revised. He enjoys performing these complex and difficult cases. In addition, Dr. Adler performs sports medicine, including knee arthroscopy with ACL and ligament reconstruction.
Dr. Adler teaches and speaks on a national level about hip and knee reconstruction. This has allowed him to interact and learn from some of the greatest minds in orthopedics today as they share insights on new technology and techniques. He has also contributed to implant and instrument design.
The majority of Dr. Adler’s free time is spent with his family. He and his wife keep busy with their children’s school and athletic activities including basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, wakeboarding, skiing, and snowboarding. He takes every opportunity to coach when he can and loves spending time outdoors

About
Dr. Baumgarten is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He is the first South Dakota physician to be elected to the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. In addition, he was the first fellowship-trained hip arthroscopy specialist to care for patients with hip pain in South Dakota.
Dr. Baumgarten served as an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team while completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. During residency, he trained with the team physicians of the St. Louis Rams, Blues, and Cardinals sports teams and is the current Head Team Physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Dr. Baumgarten is passionate about improving the quality of orthopedic and musculoskeletal care. He feels that by performing both basic science and clinical research, he can potentially help millions of people improve the quality of their lives, in addition to the patients that he sees here at the Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Baumgarten has been presented with the Charles S. Neer Award in 2011 and 2013 for the best shoulder research performed that year, and the O’Donoghue Award in 2014 for his research on ACL injuries. He is quoted in an in-depth article by ESPN on Human Growth Hormone. A very interesting read for anyone, from athletes to farmers, who are trying to recover more quickly.
In 2021, Dr. Baumgarten became the first surgeon in South Dakota to use an innovative new solution for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, BEAR, short for Bridge-enhanced ACL Repair, is a new method of repairing ACLs. The implant, combined with the patient’s blood, enables the body to heal the torn ends of the ACL.
Watch this video to hear Dr. Baumgarten explain the BEAR procedure. In this video, Carissa Judge, a patient of Orthopedic Surgeon Keith Baumgarten, MD, provides a testimonial about her BEAR ACL repair and rehabilitation.
While he is involved in many clinical trials and patent submissions, his most recent clinical study is titled Comparison Of A Novel Sling With A Traditional Abduction Sling After Shoulder Surgery.
The study aims to determine if the patent-pending novel shoulder sling has higher patient satisfaction than a traditional abduction sling with at least equivalent postoperative outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and total shoulder arthroplasty.
When Dr. Baumgarten isn’t caring for his patients or on the sideline helping athletes, he can be found participating in sports, playing and listening to music with his children, reading, and spending time with his family.

Very professional and has a great surgical team assisting him at the Orthopedic Hospital in Sioux Falls S.D.
Dr. Adler was highly recommended to me by trusted friends. He is a very professional and knowledgeable doctor with a positive, confident, and upbeat personality. The care I received at the SFSH during my hip replacement stay was the best I have ever experienced!
Excellent care from Dr. Adler and his staff and SFSH. Everyone was concerned about me and my knee and how I was doing. 5 days from surgery and, so far, I'm pleased. Dr. Adler is highly skilled, great personality and interested in the patient. Doesn't get better than that.

Love OI and Dr Curd. He’s helped me with a couple of issues and I couldn't be more pleased. The PA Chad is wonderful as well. The surgery went well, treatment(s) for another issue are as easy as they can be and easily scheduled. Definitely recommend Dr Curd to anyone with hand or shoulder issues!
