Neck and Back
I love to fix things! From an early age, I was very involved in athletic activities and with those activities came injuries. I vividly remember breaking my foot on my tenth birthday. I became a member of the OI family (known by a different name at that time) at a young age. I recall seeing Dr. Zoellner and Craig Steinborn who placed me into a cast and helped get me on the road to recovery.
My interest in putting things back together, combined with my love for the operating room, helped me choose the specialty of orthopedics. No other specialty affords you the opportunity to get people back on their feet and back to the activities they love and enjoy like the specialty of orthopedic surgery. Completing a prestigious fellowship in complex spinal reconstruction allows me to help patients with any spine condition—simple or complex, big or small. I also had extensive training in non-surgical treatment of spine conditions and patients can expect that I will exhaust non-surgical options before recommending a surgical fix.
The single most important philosophy in my practice is to treat my patients like I would want my family members to be treated. I strive to provide the highest level of compassion and thoughtfulness to each and every patient who comes through my door. I understand the importance of listening to my patients. Everyone has a story to tell. Each person is treated with the utmost respect whether they need reassurance and non-surgical treatment for a minor back strain or major spine reconstructive surgery. I am very proud to say that if a patient eventually requires a surgical procedure, they can rest assured that my PA and I will see them every day in the hospital to make sure their surgical course goes smoothly.
Dr. Wingate specializes in orthopedic spine surgery. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency (five years) and then went on to complete an additional full year of only spine surgery. He is experienced in pediatric and adult spine surgery. Dr. Wingate specializes in neck and back pain, degenerative disc disease, neck and back arthritis, disc herniations of the neck and back, spinal slip (instability), neck and back fractures, pediatric and adult scoliosis. He received extensive training in the use of the cervical (neck) disc replacement.
In addition to spine surgery, he also sees patients for general orthopedic needs—arthritis of the joints in the upper and lower extremities; pediatric and adult fractures of the arms, hips, legs, ankles; sports related injuries and tendonitis just to name a few. He is happy to evaluate any patient with symptoms related to muscles, bones and joints!
When not seeing patients, Dr. Wingate spends nights and weekends at the soccer and football fields and dance and ballet studios with his wife and three children. When time permits, they love spending time outdoors camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting. They recently added a four-legged hunting dog named Sunny to their family. In addition, Dr. Wingate thoroughly enjoys coaching soccer, tee ball, baseball, and football for his kids’ teams and he and his wife volunteer for the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools in various capacities.

I’ve only seen Dr. Wingate once. He was extremely thorough in studying my history with neck and back problems and the treatments I’d had over the years. While there are very few procedures available to me surgically, he offered me the possibility of some alleviation that had not been attempted previously. We are in the process of checking this out.

I went with my mother to see Dr. Wingate for her back/leg issue. He worked her into his schedule so a short wait was expected. However, he didn’t rush his time with her and discussed her options fully. He didn’t mind my questions and even explained how to read an MRI to me. Thanks so much for that. I couldn’t have been more impressed.
I had a L5/S1 fusion surgery 3 months ago. It took me forever to decide to go with surgery. Dr. Wingate was very patient with all of my concerns and questions and I never felt rushed at any appointment. I was unable to walk very far or stand before surgery because of pain down my leg. Now I can walk without pain and am so thankful for that. Dr. Wingate is an excellent surgeon willing to take the time to listen to his patients and very careful and skilled in the surgery he does.
