From Dr. Carlson
“I was raised on an Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota. I received much encouragement along the way from my parents, our family doctor, professors at Concordia College, and mentors at the Mayo Clinic. Their unswerving support, along with my natural interest in science and health care, led me to a career in orthopedics. A career that I have enjoyed for the past 30 years in Sioux Falls.”
About Dr. Carlson
Dr. Carlson’s practice is focused on spine surgery and total joints. His subspecialty training in pediatric orthopedics has allowed him to treat children with unusual pediatric problems from our region, as well as occasional cases brought to us from around the world. Because of his pediatric orthopedic fellowship at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Dr. Carlson, who is also a Shriner, has been instrumental in bringing the Shriners Hospital for Children complimentary screening clinic to Orthopedic Institute.
Governor Dennis Daugaard has appointed Dr. Carlson to serve his second term on the State Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. He is the Vice-President of this board.
In addition to caring for his patients, Dr. Carlson can be found serving on many community boards and helping with community fundraisers. He and his wife, Martha, have two sons who are pursuing medical careers and as a family they enjoy spending time at the lake, snow skiing, reading and spending time with their friends.
