The Sports Medicine Center at Orthopedic Institute

The Sports Medicine Center at Orthopedic Institute in Sioux Falls has been serving regional patients for nearly 30 years.

The Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Center is the regions's largest sports medicine group and includes six sports medicine doctors, four of whom are fellowship trained. Additionally, two of the orthopedic surgeons have earned a Certificate of Added Qualification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. The Sports Medicine Center at Orthopedic Institute also includes a dedicated staff of 17 athletic trainers who have years of field experience and who provide athletic training services to 32 area high schools in three states at no charge. Thirteen of the athletic trainers have masters degree level training, and three are also certified strength and conditioning specialists.

The O.I. Sports Medicine doctors provide high level services for area college and semi-pro teams. Dr. Pete Looby of Orthopedic Institute serves as the official team surgeon for South Dakota State athletics and the Sioux Falls Storm Football, Dr. Keith Baumgarten serves as the official team physician for Dakota State University athletics and the Sioux Falls Stampede Hockey, and Dr. Evan Hermanson serves as the official team physician for Southwest Minnesota State University athletics. Dr. Curd is the associate team physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede Hockey Team.

Other doctors making up The Sports Medicine Center at Orthopedic institute include Dr. Pete Rodman, Dr. Tim Zoellner, and non-surgical specialist Dr. Craig Smith.

The physicians at The Sports Medicine Center at O.I. are highly trained, experienced and dedicated to the field of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. But, patients do not have to be athletes to benefit from their expertise. It does not matter what the patient's bone and joint problem is, the doctor at Orthopedic Institute are here find the reason for it. Through diagnosis and treatment, the doctors will provide unsurpassed care and personal attention to help people achieve improved quality of life.

OI Athletic Training Program

Our Athletic Training Program currently serves more than 32 high schools in three states. Its team of certified athletic trainers, located throughout the region, provides weekly visits to high schools. The program also provides athletic training services for special event coverage upon request. A majority of the athletic trainers have masters degree level training, with years of field experience. In addition, each athletic trainer is:

  • Nationally certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association

  • Licensed by the state of South Dakota

  • Trained in on-field assessment of athletic injuries

  • Trained in First-Aid, CPR and emergency care of athletic injuries

  • Trained in pre-participation taping and bracing techniques

AVAILABLE SERVICES:
  • Pre-participation taping and bracing

  • Weekly school visits

  • Special event coverage, such as athletic tournaments

  • Strength/conditioning consultation or services

  • Educational programs on such topics as strengthening, conditioning and nutrition

  • Educational workshops in care and prevention of injuries

Orthopedic Institute Sioux Falls has clinic locations in Brookings, Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Freeman, Huron, Madison, Mitchell, Vermillion, Yankton and Sioux Falls South Dakota. With additional clinic locations in the Iowa cities of Rock Rapids, Rock Valley, Sibley as well as a location in Marshall, Minnesota. Orthopedic Institute is the largest orthopedic specialty group in the region. In addition to general orthopedics, areas of focus include back and neck pain, leg, foot, and ankle, knee or hip pain, as well as shoulder, arm, and hand problems. The group also specializes in knee and hip joint replacement, pediatrics, and offers physical medicine and physical therapy.
