The Lower Extremity Center at Orthopedic Institute
The Lower Extremity Center at Orthopedic Institute addresses pain symptoms related to leg, foot, and ankle problems.
Sometimes upper extremity injuries can be caused by traumatic injury from an automobile accident, fall or impact from a contact sport, like falling while skiing.
Other times, lower extremity problems are caused by strain of tendons and joints from repetitive activities. Basketball players can develop extensive foot and ankle problems from the repetitive strain on the lower extremities. Jumping motions required by a basketball shot, or pivoting on either foot, all can lead to strain on the lower extremities.
Orthopedic Institute has physicians who specialize in the lower extremity and treat a variety of surgical and nonsurgical problems, in addition to a team of sports medicine trainers and occupational therapists.
Athletes are at risk of extremity problems from traumatic injury, joint, tendon, or ligament problems. Click here for information on selecting the proper athletic shoe.
Unlike some other orthopedic problems, those suffering from pain symptoms in the leg, foot, and ankle can span all age ranges, from young children to older adults.
For younger people, overuse injuries can be a common byproduct of active participation in competitive sports. The training involved in competitive sports can lead to joint or ligament strain, or even stress fractures in the bones in the arm and hand.
For older people, since arthritis becomes more commonplace with age, ankle pain can become more prevalent. Work-related injuries also play a large role with lower extremity injuries, especially where a person has a job involving a high degree of standing or walking.
The good news is that many leg, foot, and ankle problems can be addressed with minimally invasive surgery involving tiny incisions and the use of scopes. This shortens the incision and lessens disruption to the muscles and joint area.
At Orthopedic Institute, the vast majority of surgical intervention related to lower extremity problems can be performed in an outpatient surgery, and patients are able to return home the same day to recover in their own home.
